Finishing up the last week of school. I can’t wait for the summer. I’ve been so busy lately I haven’t had time to build my flow hood. However, I did manage to innoculate some Shiitake, Maitake, Reishi, Wine Cap and Morel spawn bags. I also made burlap spawn for the first time. When I plant my garden I’m going to lay the burlap right next to the plants, that way the mycelium will release nutrients right above the roots.
Also, I’ve been on some interviews, some bad, some promising. I went to one in Tinley Park recently and it seemed really awesome- it was a small team doing some neat stuff for their industry, a laid back atmosphere, and really nice guys. I’ve come to the conclusion that I don’t want to by some white collar, Starbucks drinking, doped up on Prozac city guy. I hate the commute. I hate the cubicles. This place seems really excellent and I am really hoping to get it.
But if not, I also got a job at Purdue, which will allow me to be a country bumpkin all summer long. I can work on my place all summer and go fishing.
Either way I’m golden and that’s a nice feeling to have. I’ve had a hell of March/April and it’s about time some things started going my way.
I also hear it’s Morel season
I hope this year will be the year.

As of today my investments have increased in value by 42%. I sold GM and made a couple dollars (like ten). The Ford shares I bought for $90 are now worth $300. I’m looking to get into a food? dividend stock. I’m thinking Coca Cola, although Pepsi raised their dividend I think they are over valued. Finding a stock to buy now is a little scary. In March I basically looked at the one year and five year charts for companies. Most the stocks I bought were at their lowest price in at least a year. Picking solid stocks, Intel, Microsoft, GE, Kimberly Clark and Honeywell at low prices was easy. I then spent about $200 in risky stocks (Ford and GM). Ford, as mentioned earlier tripled and I should have sold GM when it was up, but I waited too long. So anyways, stock picking now is much harder, because nearly all companies were at a low in March, now they’re higher. Oh well. I’ll have to do more research from now on.

I went fishing for the first time this year! Caught a few fishes. Andrew spotted a morel in my yard. It was picked. It was rather old, and after I saw all the knats that floated off of it I decided to throw it away. First morel I had ever touched. The next day we went to Turkey Run. No morels
. But I did find some Pleurotus pulmonarius specimens. At first I thought they were Pleurotus ostreatus, but then upon doing some research I found that “Oyster Mushrooms” are actually 3 different species and there is this controversy about which species is what. They were a bit wet, but hopefully I can get a decent spore print from one of them.

No, I didn’t buy a Mac. I’m programming in PHP now. I got VS.php installed, so I didn’t sell out completely. The main thing I disliked about PHP was that the code wasn’t seperated from the page. I found out that there’s a library called Smarty that more or less seperates the two. Off to a good start. But the official Smarty site is down. So I am waiting for that to come up. I’m surprised how PERL-esque PHP is. I have a feeling it won’t be too difficult. I’m learning how to write classes now. The PHP data types drive me crazy, I’m just going to typecast everything haha.

Maggots, Michael. You’re eating maggots. How do they taste?

Those mushrooms that were obtained from Turkey Run, well, I opened my petri dishes assuming once I lifted the mushrooms there would be nice lilac white -colored spore prints waiting for me. To my surprise there were maggots waiting for me instead. About a 100 all together. They are really fast little buggers too. Oh well, maybe when I return I’ll find some better specimens.

Well, I’m in Lafayette now. It’s a quaint little city. I’m working for ITaP, writing Perl scripts. It has been so long since I worked with Perl, nearly two years. Neat thing though, since I started using PHP Perl is coming back easier. The only potential problem is Regular Expressions. I think I’ll get them once I start working with them enough.

I had a beautiful Halloween down at the lake. Unfortunately I had to come back because I’ve got things to do, school work and such
. I drained the pipes down there so they won’t freeze during the winter! I used a different technique so hopefully they will be fine, they better be fine, as i just had replaced them recently. I found a open section of 3/4 cpvc pipe next to a valve, so I took a air compressor, put the nozzle in a 1/2 to 3/4 compression fitting and duct taped it to the pipe. Hillbilly engineering at its finest. Next week, I’ll be in Evansville for a job interview. I’m pretty stoked about this company, they look very cutting edge/professional/expanding. Ironically the two days that work best for me are the 4th and 5th (my birthday). So I’m thinking about going to the casino down there.
If I were to become a zombie, I’d still be vegan.
It’s done! I finally updated my blog engine, I’ve been messing around with updating it since May. I switched from blogengine.net to word press. Now I just have to figure out how to import previous posts from Blogml to something compatible with WP. I can’t seem to find a simple solution, just plugins that require me to modify my php setup. I’m not sure how much control I have over this as my host is GoDaddy and I am not using Virtual Hosting (I will when costs come down). To fix this issue I may have to bring out the swiss army chainsaw.
I’m still working on some very cool things such as creating movies using Avisynth on a cluster, facial recognition software and a cross-platform imaging client. All this while I’ve been collecting new fungal specimens to cultivate, attending Purdue Calumet and a job part time.
I’m currently about a month into using Ubuntu exclusively. Previously there was no need to change OSes, I enjoyed and was quite use to Windows. I had worked with Fedora in the past, but it always seemed to be a pain finding certain rpms for it. This really detered my interest in Linux. I was making scripts with BASH and Perl for it, however, at the end of the day I would come home to a nice Windows box. The reason I switched was because Windows got all jacked up on my laptop again (for a 3rd time). When it came time to reinstall I took a chance and installed Unbuntu. I know what some of you may be thinking, “Ubuntu is for n00bs! _________ distro is better!” but I do not care. Ubuntu works so good with everything. It also has an insane amount of packages I can quickly download and install. Ubuntu is the only reason why I’m using Linux, it’s great, and if you haven’t made the jump yet, I highly recommend you do.
